Communication Support worker, Greenbank College

Salary: Sessional fee £15 per hour
Hours: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 9am-4pm and Wednesday 1-4pm
Contract Type: Fixed Term 9th January to 14th July 2017
Responsible to: Education and Curriculum Manager
Job Location:
Main place of work Greenbank College, Greenbank Lane, Liverpool L17 1AG. The post may require work in different locations from time to time.
Closing date: Tuesday 13th December at 4pm
Interview date: Friday 16th December 2016

Job Purpose

To meet the needs of deaf/hearing impaired students including communication support in and out of class to remove barriers to accessing learning.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• To provide communication support across the College curriculum by using an appropriate method of communication e.g British Sign Language
• To implement, record and review support strategies
• To work closely with tutors to support inclusive teaching
• To provide sign language communication at home/College meetings as required
• Undertake administrative duties, maintain records, monitor and review work in compliance with Greenbank’s quality standards
• Report any issues relating to student progress or additional support requirements to the Line Manager
• To comply with and implement all Greenbank’s policies and procedures and any other legislative requirements
• To undertake training as required.

This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post.

The post holder will be required to undertake other activities related to achieving the organisations objectives, as determined by the Manager.

This job description may be reviewed when necessary in line with the development of the organisation.

Person Specification

Candidate’s suitability will be measured by assessment in the following ways:

The main duties, qualities, skills, qualifications and experience required:

Previous experience of working in an educational setting supporting young people with varying degrees of deafness – A/O/I/R
Good working knowledge of British Sign Language and qualified to level 3 in BSL – A/I/O
Excellent organisational skills, computer and written skills – A/O/I/R
Understanding of national and legislative standards in further education sector/catering sector including OFSTED Common Inspection Framework – A/O/I/R
Familiarity with deaf culture and knowledge of specialist equipment such as loop systems etc – A/I/O
Good communication skills – A/I/O
Positive attitude towards equal opportunities and able to demonstrate commitment to the development of all students – A/O/I/R
To be a team player with the ability to work on own initiative – A/I/R
To undergo training as part of an agreed performance review system – A
Positive attitude to equality and diversity and ability to demonstrate a commitment to all students – A/I/O/R
