Hi All,

Jut to let you know about this forthcoming conference: Supporting Deaf People 2009

This is the sixth SDP conference and is aimed at deaf people and professionals working with deaf people from all over the world. The topics this year are 1) Deaf Education and 2) Ethics and Professionalism. It takes place between the 28th - 31st of January 2009.

Topics are:

Theme One (28th/29th January): d/Deaf Education
- Policy and practice in sign Bilingual education: development, dilemmas and directions (Ruth Swanwick, UK)
- Students educated in public schools with a total communication approach: perspectives & reflections (Linda J. Spencer, USA)
- Study, career and workplace experiences of Australian university graduates who are deaf or hard of hearing (Mervyn Hyde, AUS)
- The social life of deaf children in the mainstream (John Anderson, USA)

Theme Two (30th/31st January): Ethics and Professionalism
- Keynote presentation: The 'role' of the community/public service interpreter (Peter Llewellyn-Jones, UK)
- The power of personality: A study of signed language interpreters (Karen Bontempo, AUS)
- What can we learn from nurses? (provisional title) (Ben Karlin, USA)
- Shaping our future professional interpreters through formal mentoring: a pilot project (T. Pearce, J. Napier, P. Cody, S. Leane, M. Curtis, C. Clark, AUS)
- Giving and receiving feedback (Caron Hawkings, UK)
- Schooled in discretion: empowerment tools for interpreters in the educational environment (Lynette Reep, USA)
